Susie just turned 3 and I finished a lot of UFOs for her birthday. This was the last set I had to complete and I hope to blog about the others soon. These are Puperita patterns and both were a joy to sew. They work perfectly together. The Tiny Flowers Blouse is shown paired with another overall dress in the pattern, so I can't claim originality for putting the two together.
I have had the Doodle's corduroy for a couple months and when Puperita released the Lil Critters Dress I knew it would be perfect. For the Tiny Flowers Blouse, I searched Jo-Ann's for apparel fabric that would match the corduroy print and ended up in the quilting cotton section. I wish there were more specialty cottons available locally. While quilting cottons are cute they are really baggy as clothes. I hope that more people sewing clothing will encourage fabric stores to stock quality apparel fabrics.
Let's start with the Tiny Flowers Blouse. This can be made in size Newborn to 6 years. This pattern is for woven fabrics and has raglan sleeves. The neck and sleeves are lightly gathered and finished with bias trim that you cut from contrasting fabric (or the same fabric in my case). There is also directions for adding a cute bow.

Tiny Flowers Blouse Bias Sleeve Inside Detail

Overall I was impressed with the pattern. The only things I changed is I interfaced the button/snap facing, which I really feel ought to be required. I also sewed the short sides of my sleeve bias trim together before adding them to my sleeves. The pattern only has you overlap them by 3/8 inch before attaching it on the back and front, while I don't think it will come undone I just wanted it to be sewn. Finally, I attached the bias trim to the right sides of my pieces first then folded them over and topstitched in the ditch of my bias trim seam to finish attaching it to the garment. I just prefer sewing it that way.
I look forward to sewing more because it's hard to find easy comfy girls patterns designed for woven fabrics.

I was lucky and bought this during the release. Puperita offers her patterns with a special just the day they are released. On release day she sold the Dress and Romper together, so I got both PDFs for one price. I follow her on Facebook and have her starred to show up first in my feed, so I never miss her releases.

Lil Critters Dress Pocket Discovery
|
This pattern features 5 pockets. I have a love hate relationship with pockets. I love them on a garment, but I kind of hate how long they take to make. This pattern features three exterior pockets that are two layers sewn together then turned to the right side through a small hole. You finish the final seam when you edge stitch the pocket to the dress. To make it easy to sew I had the opening be on the straight side instead of the curve as pictured in the instructions. There are two views for the pockets. I chose view B which has less contrasting fabric showing. There are two side seam pockets as well, which is heavenly to a 3 year old.
The garment features a lined bodice and instructions for enclosing the waist seam. I decided to sew the sides with French seams, so there would not be any exposed sewn seams. The instructions called for a second layer to the interior pocket, but I didn't cut it originally, so I skipped it.
Quick note. The back pieces can be cut on the fold or pieced. This is helpful with the larger sizes to save fabric, but when possible I avoid seams with prints. The cutting instructions and pattern pieces provide guidance to slide the piece over if you are cutting it on the fold instead of gathering it. Don't be like me and cut it on the fold without sliding the piece over to the center back line. (If you do it will be okay though).
Okay that's enough time writing for one day. Hope my post is helpful.
